“I founded UnitedChild at the age of 14, here’s why…”
I witnessed how the pandemic quietly reshaped families in Hong Kong. In one of the most dense and expensive cities in the world, families experienced job losses, unstable income, and managing online school for children, all amidst adjusting to working from home themselves. I saw how the pressure built up. Oftentimes and perhaps inevitably, the pressure spilled over the children. Heavy emotional strain turned into tension, neglect, or even verbal and physical harm; they turn into weight over small shoulders, and it was real, but never right.
Therefore, UnitedChild became my response. Every child has the right to feel safe, heard, and protected. I wanted to create a space where children of all socioeconomic backgrounds knew their rights and ways to call for help, as well as caretakers and teachers, who have the largest influence on adolescence, to support them and prevent harm before it begins.
This number stuck with me as more than a statistic, but a call for action. I want to build this community on empathy, understanding, and change, where no child deserves to grow up feeling invisible and isolated.
Nearly 1 out of 4 children
has reported some form of abuse or neglect in Hong Kong.
